Projects:
Canning River Eco Education Centre
Wilson Park, Western Australia, 2008
Located within the boundaries of the Canning River Regional Park, this facility expresses the commitment of the local community and state government to environmental education. The Client’s brief required PGA to meet the needs of educators, local community groups and the general public through a simple laboratory space, internal and external teaching areas, a gallery for interpretive artwork displays, community group meeting rooms, function/seminar spaces and kiosk/café. The Canning River Eco Education Centre is designed to articulate ecologically sound principles and ideals, affording the community a tangible example of the way forward to a more environmentally sound philosophy for the future.
Mandurah Marine Operations Centre
Mandurah, Western Australia, 2009
The Centre straddles the Mandurah breakwater, overlooking the ocean to the north and the Ocean Marina to the south of Breakwater Parade. The Departments of Water, Environment and Fisheries, along with a division of the WA Water Police, call this advanced facility home. The building comprises 1,500m2 of offices and 525m2 of secure vessel storage and workshop spaces for the marine operations of all tenants. Designed to encapsulate the philosophies of its tenants, this innovative building makes the most of the location to create an environmentally sensitive, ecologically sound, energy efficient address, looking to the present and future needs of the public and community. The building brief required a clear segregation of public and secured spaces, simultaneously delivering a public interface while providing a secure working environment for the occupants.
St Munchin’s Catholic Primary School
Gosnells, Western Australia, 2011
The school’s request for Commonwealth funding was based on a need for an extension to their Early Learning Centre and a new Multi-Purpose Hall. The Early Learning Centre (ELC) extension made provision for an expanded three-year-old programme and also doubled as a new after-hours care facility. Our brief was to provide a new teaching space, separate facilities suitable for student and staff use, storage and a new kitchen. The new rooms interconnected by a double door to the existing ELC to allow easy communication for the ELC teachers, while providing security when appropriate. A new Multi-Purpose Hall was proposed to sit to the north-west of the ELC. Based loosely on the standard template design supplied by the Catholic Education Office, we developed a customised floor plan to suit the school’s specific needs. In particular, we developed the main hall with a view to provide a speech and music performance space, rather than a generic multi-use area without any particular character.
