Mount Gambier City Hall Redevelopment
Mount Gambier, 2004
This project drew much public debate in the local community during design and construction. Civic pride in the precinct is extremely high, and with the associated upgrade of the state heritage listed Cave Gardens, the need for improvement in services and overall appearance was of great importance. The redevelopment not only provided a much-needed overhaul of the City Hall building, but also established an innovative re-organization of facilities to ensure effective use. Forms are co-ordinated with adjoining historic structures to provide a harmonised development. The change of use and upgrade of buildings provides a fitting conclusion to the redevelopment works carried out on the Cave Gardens precinct by increasing activities in the area and promoting the precinct as the civic hub of Mt Gambier.
Cotterill Residence
Mount Gambier, 2007
A backdrop of valuable eucalyptus genetic seed orchard with rolling paddocks to the south, required a built form that understood, and then modified the wind exposed position to enable human habitation in a lifestyle-friendly way. Construction materials reflect the rural landscape metaphors of sheds/tanks/paddocks. The cantilevered south face acknowledges the original landscape form, reduces the visual massing and diminishes the cut/fill impact to the site. The plan form uses the dynamics of the site to provide sheltered entry, with the owners having complete overview of comings and goings.
