Architects own residence
Hughes, ACT, 2007
Alerations & additions to existing residence. The home was upgraded substantially internally by creating teenagers and adults zones. An extra adult wing was added with a master bedroom, ensuite and walk-in robe to provide parent retreat. All windows were replaced with double glazing, all external stud walls were fully insulated and linings replaced. A recycled Spotted Gum hardwood floor was laid over the existing pine floor to increase the insulation value and provide a more durable floor finish to suit Canberra’s climate. A number of walls were removed to create an open plan kitchen-laundry/family/dining room area thus providing a far better enterainment area for both family and adults. The external pergola was upgraded to increase the northern light into the family areas in the winter months. The home functions very well and energy wise is very efficient, resulting in cost saving measures with heating & cooling.
Deakin Residence
Deakin, 2006
Alterations & Additions to existing residence. This residence had substantial alterations and additions carried out internally and externally. The brief was to provide a second city residence for 2 teenagers and their parents. The teenager studio apartments were located upstairs. The parents retreat was situated downstairs where most of the adult facilities were for ease of access. All bathrooms new and old were fully upgraded to a high standard. A new kitchen and family room was added creating a courtyard area with a pond to the parents wing. An external studio was added with its own facilities allowing multi purpose use. The home was fully insulated and new double glazing installed.
Hughes 2 Residence
Hughes, 2008
Alterations & Additions to existing residence. This residence has had a number of extensions in the past catering for the family’s growing needs. The client required a Studio to be able to operate a small business from. The design included an office area with waiting room that could be converted back into a Granny Flat with ensuite when and if the need arose. Direct access from the street was another important design principle. The materials used were corrugated iron and red brickwork. The Studio was orientated in a northerly direction thus allowing full sunlight during the Winter months and creating an exceptional environment to work or live in. The Studio is fully insulated with double glazed windows.
