Bass’s house
Lower North Shore, 2013
Alterations and additions to a post war cottage on a corner block, originally built by Bass, a Kakoda Trail veteran. The brief was to maintain most of the existing house, while adding to it to provide a contemporary solution, when most others would have demolished it and discarded its value in retained memory. The original house was deconstructed and opened to the north, with concrete slab floors that act as heat sinks in the winter with flat, cantilevered, contemporary roof forms wrapping around the original hip roof that exclude the sun in summer and create tension between the geometry of the old and the new. ‘Creation is the great mime. Such men know to begin with, and then their whole effort is to examine, to enlarge, and to enrich the ephemeral island on which they have just landed.’ Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus. Bradleys Head Road
Lower North Shore, 2011
Alterations and additions to a large heritage listed house for patrons with a respect for all the trades and the professionals involved. The brief was to demolish unsympathetic and inferior previous additions, to improve the quality of light to the interior, to create an environment with respect for the past but with the flexibility required to allow the house to be used for generations to come, and to continue the story the house tells.
