Alterations and Additions
Melbourne, 2009
Altering and adding to existing houses is an extremely challenging design process. Nott Architecture respect the existing buildings but are always conscious of the high costs involved in restoring and repairing compared to building new. With 30 years experience in altering and extending inner suburban and country houses, including many restorations, Nott architecture has developed a clear design approach. New light filled living spaces face the sun and open out to landscaped gardens. Sustainability and low energy use are incorporated into the design process for all designs. The examples shown here illustrate the personalised design of the living areas and the use of colours and natural materials to contrast with the robust industrial appearance of the exteriors.
Commercial, Community and Institutional
Melbourne, 2010
Nott Architecture enjoys the excitement of exploiting new materials and new building systems. Lessons learnt from large industrial projects are applied to our commercial projects. Large spans, adaptable structures, high ceilings, accessible services and light weight panel walls. The projects illustrated are examples of these applications: large spans, large double glazed windows and hi-tech materials. The Internal view is an example of Nott Architecture’s skills in using recycled materials and applied artwork.
New Houses
Melbourne and Gippsland, 2009
Like sunflowers, the houses open up to the North sun. Cantilevered roofs soar out over the double glazed windows and doors. The living spaces open out to landscaped gardens. Colours and finishes are subdued earthy and bold to contrast with the industrial and mechanical structural elements. More intimate areas, like bedrooms and passages have warm and comfortable colours and finishes. Whether it is a coastal house or an inner city apartment, the same design approach allows the occupants to face the sun, sit in the shade or retreat to the cool space to relax. Sustainability and low energy use are crucial in Nott Architecture’s design approach.
