Beilsdown River Seniors Living
Dorrigo, NSW, 2013
The Bielsdown River Seniors Living project is a 60 unit self care development on the banks of the Bielsdown River in Dorrigo, NSW. The site is 750 metres above sea level on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Dorrigo is surrounded by National Parks and despite the altitude the development is only 40 minutes from pristine beaches and minutes from the Bellingen Valley. This positioning means that the site is susceptible to a broad range of weather conditions, from SW alpine winds to warm coastal breezes. Torrential summer rains and cold dry winters. The brief for the project is to produce the “greenest” seniors living development in Australia. with such a diverse climate the project has opportunities to incorporate an array of environmentally sustainable features. The parklike setting will feature homes that are powered by grid-feed solar and wind generation systems; air conditioned with reverse cycle geothermal coupling; waste will be pre-treated to remove and use methane and the buildings will be constructed from locally sourced materials and labour. A climate specific symbiotic building solution that benefits the residents, community and environment alike.
