The client has lived in the houses for 11 years. The original 2 bedroom weatherboard house was constructed in 1959. It had served them well over the last decade but now with the birth of their first child they recognized the need to create a more spacious and flexible home. The brief was for the creation of a third bedroom, increased living space and a double garage with internal access. Producing a building which allowed for a balance of socializing and family life was essential. The site affords great views that were keen to maximize while maintaining a high level of privacy Architect, Client and Builder worked closely together pre-construction to ensure we were all on the same page in our understanding of how details, aesthetics and the pragmatics of the building would work. This approach ensured very few issues or variations arose during construction Sustainability and energy efficiency credentials were extremely important to both client and architect. We wanted to create a space that is easy to heat in winter while being able to be opened up in summer, for maximization of passive ‘cross-ventilation’ cooling. The corners of the building leading onto the terrace space slide open to provide six and a half meters of opening to the outside. Negating the need for corner columns allows for free flowing space at the peripheries which are so often underutilized.
