Bespoke Architects is a boutique studio based in Newtown VIC, with a strong focus on design and client satisfaction. Established in 2010, Bespoke Architects is the collaborative union of Daniel Calder and Nicole Walters. Both are Architecture Graduates for Deakin University School of Architecture and Building. Both have earlier qualifications in Building Design and Drafting from The Gordon. With a background in commercial design and documentation and a current portfolio of residential projects, we are focused on working with clients from the concept stage of projects through to contract administration and the completion of construction to ensure the client’s vision is realised.

Bespoke House 0
Ocean Grove VIC, 2011
Nestled in the new Kingston Estate in Ocean Grove is Bespoke House 0, a single storey brick veneer home designed by Bespoke Architects co-founder Daniel Calder. Bespoke House 0 is Daniel’s his first home designed for himself, his partner and their two year old German Shepard. Daniel not only faced the challenges of being both the designer and the client, he also had to wrestle with constraints of the budget and the Kingston Estate design covenants. Daniel’s creative flair produced a unique home that meet all the requirements for materials, sitting and massing. The end result is a definitive architectural style that blends well with the young neighbourhood character. Completed in 2011 the build went smoothly both a testament to Daniel’s project management style and his working relationship with David McGovan Builders. Interestingly Daniel’s diplomacy skills where put to the test as his father Mark was the site foreman for the project. (We are please to report two years on father and son have a very strong relationship and Bespoke Architects are enjoying working with David McGovan Builders on several other projects including Bespoke Renovation 7 currently under construction)

Bespoke Renovation 2: Approached by current owners of this previously renovated Californian Bungalow, on a smaller inner suburban block. We were asked to help design an extension for the home to allow for 3 bedrooms, a separate study, a 2nd bathroom, a separate laundry and to create a kitchen that wasn’t located in an open plan family living area. As the previous open plan renovation had created an area where everything happened within the same space, not ideal with two primary school aged children. After modelling the existing home and several meetings with the family at the house and seeing how they and their children used the space; it became apparent that only a small extension in footprint was necessary to the rear to allow for both formal and informal living spaces. By reinstating the original 4 rooms with central hallway we where able to get the necessary number of bedrooms and a study with a small extension to the west off one of the rooms to create the ensuite and walk in robe. We continued the central hallway through into to exiting open plan area to help divide it up. Rather than blending the appearance of the extensions with the existing weatherboard clad, gable roofed house the clients where open to the idea of contrasting the extensions with lightweight panel look cladding and flat roof, to be painted in a complementary contrasting colours.

Bespoke Renovation 5: Approached by current owners of this near 100 year old single storey weatherboard cottage, located in the heart of South Geelong. We were asked to help create a single storey weatherboard extension, a project 9 years in the making for our clients. ‘Set to be their dream home after 15 years of living in the existing double fronted victorian house. ‘ Having demolished the lean-to that has served them for so long; the extension with it’s modest budget, has to cater for a family of 4 adults and will comprise the kitchen, open plan living and meals, two-way bathroom and laundry. ‘With the four rooms’of the original’house’to be kept as bedrooms and a 2nd lounge. The extension’s style while sympathetic to the existing period home, is set to have a luxurious industrial feel; polished concrete floor’s in rich browns, a feature Champagne coloured freestanding cast iron bath, with single bulb crystal pendant lights above, and a recycled industrial work bench as a vanity. There are oversized Feature timber face sliding doors to blend the existing lounge to the generously proportioned new kitchen which will showcase both the client’s love of cooking and their unique style as French provincial is blended with industrial chic. ‘ Completed in June 2013.
