Projects:
Saint Francis Xavier Trade Training Centre
Newcastle, 2011
A large hospitality centre incorporating two commercial kitchens & a cafe / learning space, was designed to employ reverse block-veneer construction & thermal chimneys & to naturally ventilate the building. Conceived as two giant knives cutting through the building, the chimney blades & the forms, materials & colour selections of the rest of the building have played with this idea to create a cheese platter which is a welcome addition to a somewhat staid school environment.
Keir Residence
Avoca Beach, 2010
This contemporary beach shack stemmed from the client’s love of the classic fibro shacks on the Central Coast. Sustainability drove the cruciform plan that faces due north & welcomes the winter sun with a subtle “swooshing” roof whilst also connecting the rear garden with the view. For a steeply sloping site, expansive usable outdoor rooms are created with a series of terraces & decks that all enjoy the uninterupted views over the lagoons to the beach.
Tonkin Residence
Woy Woy Bay, 2009
This small addition to a modest home sits in stark contrast to the mediocre architecture of the house itself. Tight site constraints have produced a small, contemporary & lightweight box that plays with materials, colour & texture to create visual interest & intrigue. The success of the addition & positive reception from neighbours & the community has spurred the client to take on the bigger problem of the original house.
