CSV House

Gold Coast, 2009

After being commissioned to design a front fence to complement a yet-to-be-built dream home on this property, the clients were so impressed they engaged Shane Denman Architects to design the home as well. Seeking low-maintenance finishes, a slightly industrial aesthetic, dramatic street appeal and open-plan living with seamless internal-external access, the clients requested that Shane capitalize on the river views, offer separate parents and childrens retreats, and design a bridge link over the two-storey entry void to provide privacy to the guest suite. Pase Builders were selected to construct the design. Committed to the integrity of the project, the home was completed on time and budget with a high quality finish. A striking combination of materials was used internally and externally to great effect. Polished concrete floors, off-form concrete ceilings, face blockwork walls and spotted gum vertical shiplap cladding combine to create a dramatic look that is low-fuss and easily maintained. Mature trees were retained which posed a design challenge that was overcome, while a host of environmentally-friendly features was also incorporated into the home such as a large glass skylight into the centre of the house, natural cross ventilation via strategically placed glass louvers and rainwater harvesting tanks.

128 – Medical Centre

Southport, 2005

The Queen Street entry to 128 is protected by a large red painted masonry blade which gives focus to the front security doors as well as an impressive building ID to the street. The site slopes considerably away from the street and the planning for vehicular access and parking was very challenging, resulting in 2 levels of parking under 3 levels of medical consulting uses. Using the slope of the land the architects were able to provide natural ventilation to the upper parking level which provided a visual break between building and ground along the eastern side and also assisted in reducing the visual bulk of the building facing the residential development adjacent. The building was constructed predominantly using concrete blockwork with reinforced concrete slabs and a steel framed metal sheet roof. The design is simple, clean, colourful and interesting with well defined articulation in elevation facets. The materials of painted, rendered blockwork, lightweight board, colourbond metal sheeting and glass were chosen for their low maintenance and ability to assist with the articulation into smaller surface facade areas and disguising the scale of the building bulk. Development of the former residential area into medical and complimentary uses is imminent and being the first in the area, this development has set a high level of standard in design and functional presence to the precinct for others to emulate.
