Calamvale Hotel
Calamvale, Brisbane, QLD, 2010
The concept was to create a space that combines two valued Australian forms of dining with a modern twist: bringing the Australian love of outdoor dining into the classic hotel. The use of natural light, local materials and native plants help achieve this concept. The western edge of the building features a spine wall, screening patrons from traffic. The northern facade is comprised of glazed bifolding doors opening onto a landscaped terrace. The steel portals which provide a voluminous and flexible interior are exposed to express the structure. A blade wall with matt and polished pitch black tiles divides the existing hotel from the new dining extension. Overhead timber battens allow filtered sunlight to penetrate the space. Materials were selected to enhance the alfresco theme: robust outdoor pavers paired with the warm hues of timber, clean white and black surfaces accented with metallic copper tones. The strong geometric forms of the architecture are softened by organic patterns in the laser-cut screen and replicated in the carpet pattern. Finishes fold from one plane into another and intricate detailing or patterns are echoed in new forms. Natural rattan furniture further emphasizes the outdoor atmosphere. The result is a venue that is stylish and casual, reflecting the values of everyday Australians.
Consortium
Townsville, QLD, 2009
The Consortium Nightclub was designed to activate and heighten the patron’s sensory experience by creating a simple, spatially rich interior that reflected the client’s desire to provide a venue different to those offered in the nightclub precinct of Flinders Street, Townsville. The design aimed to create the illusion of height over the low existing ceiling to the main bar, whilst utilising the two storey void that was created in the existing concrete slab. Spaces were defined by furnishings and changes in floor level with venue lighting achieved through state of the art interactive lighting systems accentuating the black and white palette.
Hillbrook Chapel
Hillbrook Anglican School, Brisbane, QLD, 2007
The conception of Hillbrook Chapel, the Tree of Life chapel, arose through the desire for a flexible, spiritual space. Primarily used a place of worship, the chapel was to facilitate the school with additional space for teaching, learning and contemplation. Contributing to the community, the chapel acts as a venue for weddings, funerals, baptisms and a variety of performances / presentations. The chapel rests on the edge of an embankment located in a quiet corner of the school, creating a peaceful retreat for patrons bounded by landscaped plaza.
