Aquinas College
Ashmore, 2014
Stage 2 of a 10 year master plan included a new hospitality centre, flexible teaching spaces and undercover sports facility. The new works were designed to envelope the existing drama and arts buildings to create a cultural precinct and offered a new entry to the school for after hours functions. Comprising of a commercial kitchen, teaching kitchens, restaurant space, textile room and both flexible and general learning areas over 3 storeys the hub of the works enliven a previously detached area of the school. The covered sports facilities have been designed to allow for future enclosure to become a state of the art performance hall, that coupled with the commercial quality kitchen and function space will provide the ability for the school to put on fully catered events that engage many facets of the curriculum. Middleton Residence
SALT, Kingscliff, 2007
This was a budget house with a great brief. Our clients loved the beach and bought a block of land in the newly developing SALT, south of Kingscliff. With a focus on family, entertainment and growing kids the program needed an active heart with space for retreat. Splitting the functions into 2 buildings to allow for a diversifying family unit and setting the main house back on the block created a small oasis on entry and encourages an outdoor and private lifestyle in an otherwise dense neighbourhood. After entering through the lush garden the front door access opens deep into the centre of the house and the open kitchen / living areas which connects directly to the outdoor bbq. This 2 storey space faces north into the raised pool and merges into a covered outdoor living space with large vertical operable louvres. Designed to maximise ventilation and an outdoor lifestyle it also allows the winter warmth to penetrate deep into the house for comfortable passive thermal control all year round. Interested in pursuing a typical ‘Australian barn’ typology within an otherwise white rendered block neighbourhood this house is playful and active. The large operable louvres maintain an active facade that livens the street by providing an ever changing face. Robina CPAC
Robina State School, 2010
Robina Community Performing Arts Centre acts as an interface between the school and public. Afforded a secondary street frontage the centre provides direct public access to engage with the community and after hours access independent of the school operations. A north facing courtyard provides hard and soft surface play and recreation space that connects directly into the secure school network. The link network continues through the centre to the on site secure drop off zone. Located on a hill the design of the centre takes advantage of the slope to enhance the functionality and comfort. The stage includes a full height operable shutter to open up the back to a grassed amphitheatre. The eastern louvred wall overlooks the oval and collects all the cooling breezes to scoop through the main hall. Large bi-fold doors open to the northern forecourt to provide a seamless transition between the internal and external space.
