Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital
Brisbane, 2014
Conrad Gargett, in joint venture with Lyons, were commissioned for the architecture, landscape and interior design of the new Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in 2007. Opened in 2014, the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital is a 359 bed tertiary/quaternary hospital in inner city Brisbane. . Its innovative and colourful design incorporates leading edge diagnostic and treatment facilities which provide specialist health services for children. The client’s brief was for a welcoming, bright and supportive environment for young patients and their families. The design process began with research into the typology of the modern hospital. The project was an opportunity to contest prevailing functionalist and medico-centric models, to radically rethink the care model and design a building which would act as a touchstone for the local community. The design concept is of a ‘living tree’. Double height spaces (branches) radiate from two vertical atria (trunks) in the centre of the plan. These extend to the street to form framing portals and balconies and the branches also bring light and air into the building. The design promotes a positive, rich and stimulating architectural experience, incorporating landscape, maximizing daylight and views, and facilitating wayfinding.
BDO Workplace

BDO’s new Brisbane office is a 6000 sqm fitout that occupies six levels of ‘the Blue Tower’ at 12 Creek Street and accommodates 450 staff. Through an extensive briefing process Conrad Gargett examined the work styles of BDO to understand how the new workplace could support their organisational culture. The new workplace features a public floor for formal client interface, including reception, a suite of meeting rooms and flexible training rooms. The reception area focuses on heightening the client experience by revealing spectacular framed views through a sculptural timber portal. A refined palette of materials, textures and colours create a domestic feel for the comfort of clients while reflecting the BDO corporate brand. Typical floors were designed with a reduction in private offices to increase communication, natural light access, efficiency and collaboration in the new office. A focused zone of built environment around the core and western facade includes all the fixed, built-in facilities such as offices, meeting rooms, shared quiet spaces, utilities and staff kitchens. Shared breakout spaces are positioned to take advantages of the best views towards the Brisbane River, and each level has been given its own identity which has been expressed through different finishes and furnishings.
Old Government House
QUT Gardens Point, Brisbane, 2009
Conrad Gargett Architecture was commissioned as the Principal Consultant and Design Architect for the restoration and adaptive re-use of Old Government House, the most important colonial building in Queensland, to house function venues, an interpretive centre, the William Robinson Gallery, offices and a cafe. Old Government House is one of Queensland’s most important colonial buildings and its conservation and adaptation of the building, together the associated grounds and landscape, will create a great sense of vitality for the building as well as a focus for the Cultural Precinct within the Gardens Point Campus.
