Reddog Architects is a young professional design practice that specialises in architecture, interior design and project management. We have been involved in the design of purpose built facilities for retail, commercial and residential industry clients in both the private and public sectors. Our design approach is flexible and explores a number of solutions. We have extensive experience in large and small scale projects that have required an exploration of ideas. Mt Sheridan Plaza
Cairns, Queensland, 2012
This significant extension to an existing shopping centre includes three new entries, two major retailers and food court as well as new mall and specialty tenancies. Mt Sheridan Plaza is located between a major highway and a suburban area with a vegetated mountain backdrop. The design attempts to address these different contexts whilst generating a singular expression and aesthetic continuity throughout. A key element for achieving this is the use of the coloured ‘ribbon’ motif which reoccurs consistently at different scales and guises. Formally these ribbons notionally reference the landscape forms; in colour they take cues from the roadside context and references to highway signage. They are dominant in areas of social interaction, are a key element in the defining wayfinding process and collectively suggest a branding strategy for the centre. A robust but refined palette of charcoal, grey and white is used which acts as backdrop to the expression of individual tenants rather than competition. CQU Health Clinic
Rockhampton, Queensland, 2012
Central Queensland University’s new Health Clinic at the Rockhampton campus accommodates students, patients, academics and clinicians from a variety of disciplines. The modest scale of the building belies its pivotal role in the future of the campus. The architecture draws cues from civic and domestic typologies in an attempt to address patients in a manner that is at both professional and familiar. A yellow screen acts a bold backdrop to a future rehabilitation courtyard. A patterned brickwork wall references the colours of mottled eucalypt bark and the dappled shadows cast by their canopy. The building sits between two landscapes; a protected landscape of wild eucalypts and a collection of angophoras on a lawn. The clinic takes advantage of the southern outlook by locating significant clinical functions on this edge. The resulting spaces are subdued and filled with soft natural light. Conversely, the north-western edge is active. Clinicians will be able to observe the daily activities in the garden below from behind the building’s iconic screen. Volumetric relief and natural light to the centralised circulation is provided via voids and skylights.
