Research into the original rainforest dwellings of the region has revealed dome shaped gunyahs were common and due to the nature of our wet season, these were often clustered together to provide larger communal spaces protected from the elements. Inspiration for our ribbed domes was drawn from the architecture of these dwellings. Palm fronds were a common cladding used in the rainforest and this is reflected in the chevron external louvre skin of the building. Solar flues represent the tree trunks of the forest and help to reduce the scale of the dome forms.

The built form is intentionally bold set amongst conventional classroom blocks, emphasizing the prominence of its function. The round planform symbolises the hub and the location on site is intended to ensure that almost all children and parents who enter the school from the public drop-off area are exposed to the library entrance each day. The building can function with natural daylight into most spaces, from large glazed walls to the east and from high-level glazing around the perimeter and protection of these by deep verandah spaces or large overhangs offers a fragmented façade of strongly geometric elements.
