Aldinga Beach Children’s Centre
Aldinga Beach, 2015
This complex is an integrated indoor and outdoor learning environment for 65 pre-school children from 3 to 5 years with provision for an Inclusive Preschool Program for children with disabilities. The Centre is a community hub providing a wide range of community and allied health services. Thanks to Director Jane Moore and Lauren Jew and staff, the Centre has quickly become a key part of the community heart of Aldinga Beach. At the 2015 C.E.F.P.I. National Conference, this building won the Commendation Award in the Category 1 for New Buildings. http://cefpi.org.au/awards/2015-awards/2015-category-1-new-construction-entire-new-school/aldinga-beach-childrens-centre The Jury Citation stated “… the emphasis on inclusiveness and openness is addressed through the use of “see-through” spaces and great use of natural light…The use of natural materials and a gentle palette is entirely refreshing and privileges colour through people and objects. The community involvement in the design, and the active use of evaluation is impressive. By addressing playful ideas, using a local theme and incorporating sustainable materials, this centre appears to be more than appropriate for the community it serves. It looks like a joyful place to be”.

Previously configured as Administration and Classrooms, the Stage 1 brief required half of this building to transform to a fully functioning Library-Resource centre which could expand to fill the whole building in Stage 2. The original building provided interesting transitions in structure and volume through the space, but a previous re-configuration had lost that character with dividing walls and flat ceilings. This new design provides a dramatic geometric, triangulated dropped bulkhead leading from the external foyer through the middle of the space. With its undulating underside and segmented edges, combined with a full gloss finish, the bulkhead exudes a vibrancy and vitality fostering a dynamic and exciting learning environment. The geometry of the bulkhead is picked up by the joinery and responds to the angled structure and raking roof. It divides the high, light-reflective cathedral ceiling from the lower east-side with its perforated corrugated zincalume ceiling defining the quieter study spaces. The rich ochre-coloured blade wall at the entry shears into the interior, leading the eye past the Circulation Desk. The frameless glass on the opposite side draws the viewer in while retaining the connection with the exterior. A stimulating and welcoming, dynamic and very cost-effective transition to a contemporary Library Resource Centre
