Shahe Simonian Architects is a small to medium size practice focused on design solutions that bring together aesthetics, function & budget through open communication with our clients. Our genuine interest and approach is to understand how we use space rather than implementing preconceived ways of doing things. We believe good design is possible within all budgets and constraints.

Projects:
Courtyard house
Mosman, 2009
The existing 1950’s almost-modernist house perched above the reserve inspired an alteration that opens the house to the landscape. Facing north, this design tempers the environment while retaining the spectacular views to Seaforth beyond. The house captures the view, shelters the pool and gathers the landscape in a series of terraces.
The Light Box
Paddington, 2007
Terraced houses typically possess a cluster of cellular rooms with small windows, and a poor connection to the small garden space at the rear of the property. The design of this three-bedroom property uses the cellular rooms for bedrooms, transforming the rear into a larger, more open plan living and entertaining area that opens onto a northern courtyard. It takes the form of a two-storey volume with ribbon windows and a play of materials tethered to the masonry core of the original terrace using a narrow glass link. On the ground floor, this link contains the kitchen and on the first floor, the bathrooms. A flat, thinly proportioned roof tilts open to the east, pouring morning sun into the bedrooms and bathrooms.
Escarpa – Multiple Housing
Mosman, 2010
Our client’s aim was to develop an apartment for those who loved their homes, but felt it was time to ‘down size’. We offered a solution where each apartment felt like a home, with separate entrances, privacy, connected outdoor spaces, natural light and genuine cross ventilation, and most importantly a window to the sky. This project recently received two awards at the Mosman Design Awards (2011)
