living space: cockburn central

Perth, Western Australia, 2011

We believe that this is a unique opportunity to create an example of urban design that will be a model for the future development of Cockburn Town centre in terms of quality of place, architecture and sustainability and will provide the basis for the growth of a healthy community. Underpinning our proposal is a belief in the importance of vibrant, and accessible series of public spaces, including safe and interesting street scapes. Our view is that urban design , the most public of art forms , provides the canvass for the creation of meaningful architecture. As is illustrated in the following diagrams and plans, Living Space is more than just a mixed use project, it will be a vital urban place.

life.lab

docklands, Melbourne, 2008

Life.Lab is an ongoing experiment in developing a model for buildings that are truly mixed in their usage and have a strong sense of community. The architecture is colourful, exuberant and is intended to project optimism and innovation. The basic idea of the SoHo units is derived from the trend of converting lofts into live/work studios. In order to achieve a high degree of adaptability, the building has been designed on a 40m2 module with a regular system of vertical service stacks. Communal facilities such as a large meeting room with A.V equipment, tea kitchens, and toilets are located around the space created by the two atriums.

Bay Corner Offices

Brighton, Victoria, 2008

BayCorner is a mixed-use building with street level caf’ and shops, 2 upper levels of office accommodation, topped with a fourth storey, residential apartment. The main entrance is from Bay Street via a three storey space enclosed with full height horizontal louvres giving the feeling of airy and light portico. Our primary goal was to design a mixed-use building of quality, that would stimulate the re-vitalisation of a traditional, suburban high street. This project is a model for decentralised development in terms of the way it deals with issues such as urban scale, use of contemporary design language, mix of uses, and integrated sustainability design. Bay Street Brighton has until recently been a suburban high street characterised by a mix of two storey Victorian buildings, and 80’s office buildings. Bay Street has been identified as an activity centre in the Bayside structure plan, which is now leading to the re-development and densification of use on a number of sites. We believe that the development of vibrant urban villages will reduce the dependence on vehicular transport into the city .
