Steele Street Townhouses
Caulfield, 2011
Two new luxury townhouses, completed in 2011. The brief was to create two new homes each with three bedrooms and a study, with a focus on design and high quality materials, yet achieve this on a modest budget. Designed in a side by side configuration, giving both townhouses a street frontage and maximising the available area on site, by eliminating a driveway to the rear. Both townhouses are designed with their living areas facing north to maximise the sun in winter and eliminate it
Pine Grove Residence
Malvern, 2007
Placed amongst an intact Victorian and Edwardian street, this is the first new home built in this street in over 100 years. The challenge was to create a new home that was both modern and yet in keeping with its heritage significant streetscape. The front section of the home is a modern interpretation of a Victorian era single fronted residence. The floating roof mimics the verandahs associated with these houses, whilst the four blockwork ‘blade’ walls represent the verandah posts, and creates the symmetry found in these homes. The choice of materials and colours softens the modern lines. With north facing the street, the house has been designed as two pavilions linked by a glass corridor. This creates a large internal courtyard allowing full north light into the living spaces in the rear pavilion. The front pavilion containing the entry and study, acts as a buffer to the street by creating privacy to the internal courtyard and living areas of the rear pavilion. The council would not allow a double storey house in this wholly single storey street, so the rear/ living pavilion is set back far enough that you can not see its double storey form. This solution appeased the council’s requirements, whilst providing enough space for the clients, despite the very small lot. Interior design and landscape design also by Darren Naftal Architecture.
