Pyang House
Malua Bay NSW, 2009
This dual occupancy perched delicately on a Cliff top Malua the on the South coast is a highly successful collaboration between innovative design and “attention to detail” construction. This duplex is the brainchild of a group of 4 families and combines a successful synthesis of crisp non-standard domestic aesthetics, semi commercial materials with a very informal yet spectacular relationship of inside to out. The spare minimalism of the architectural detailing and joinery counterpoint the inclusion rich warm natural materials. There is some distinct innovation in the architectural form expressed by the simple wavelike roof that appears to slide and float over the lower element. The roofs themselves constitute a very strong architectural feature with the substantial cantilevers coming to an innovatively detailed and elegant thin edge. This subtle treatment serves to emphasize the tension of the cantilever producing a building of singular, individual and original architectural style.
Hodak House
Canberra, 2003
This house to the north-west of Canberra has won several significant design awards including theHIA house of the year award in 2003. Its final form is both a tribute to the good taste and intimate involvement of the clients Zvoni Hodak and Phil Young. The design reference harks back to the early 20th-century and the works of an American architect; Richard Neutra. The design elements that characterise the house are the strong overlapping horizontal roof forms punctuated by a dramatic and rich natural stone wall. Large areas of glass make best use of spectacular views from the hilltop location and allow for significant solar gain. The minimalist approach to interior design stemmed from the clients own strong design sense and a close collaboration with the interior designer, Jayne Miller. The result is a dramatic yet understated interior fitout.
rafferty extension
Canberra, 2010
The main thrust of the design of this remodelling project was to take a tired existing dwelling located in an old Canberra suburb, wave a magic wand, and create ‘Architecture’ whilst correspondingly responding to a fairly detailed brief. The following is an extract from the client’s own brief and it highlights some of the key ideas sought by them from the outset; ‘We really like simple clean modernist designs with plenty of light and good connections between interior spaces and gardens. ‘We like the minimalism of your Hodak/Young house (we also prefer planar forms over curvilinear ones). ‘We enjoy tasteful use of natural materials (e.g. timber, sandstone) and do not like cold, austere, and industrial minimalism. ‘We like frameless corner windows and those that extend to the roof ‘Finally, we love beautiful designs and enjoy them even more when they are functional and highly efficient in energy and material use. The design reconfigures the existing roof entirely to achieve the modernist ‘planar’ looked sought by the client. The addition of a bedroom suite at the upper level gives the form a massing and vertical emphasis which departs radically from the low scale horizontal emphasis of the original.
