Swell Architects
Swell Architects is a boutique firm with over 38 years of partner experience in residential and commercial projects. Principal Matt Brindley has been the project lead on numerous projects across Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East. At Swell Architects, we will listen to the brief and ask many questions to assist us to design the best solution for our clients. Matt uses 3D computer modelling throughout the project and interactively presents solutions that satisfy the brief and allow all stakeholders to understand the building, including those constructing the building, so that the final product is achieved with minimal variations in cost or design.

Jones House
North Balgowlah Sydney, 2010
The Jones House sits on a post war suburban street surrounded by small 1950’s cottages. It was designed for a young professional couple with two children. The brief was to provide a 4 bed house that provided dual living spaces, not only to, at times, separate adults and children but also to take advantage of the summer and winter environments. The Living/reading room has a fireplace and no TV. It has street verandah which overlooks the street, takes in the southerly view and allows the family to get away from the hot summer sun. The Family Room oriented to the north backyard opens up with folding doors to a pergola shaded terrace. Both spaces have sloping ceilings to allow more light to flood the spaces. The lower level includes a garage, rumpus room spare bedroom, bathroom and wine cellar. The clients have told us “it has changed the way we live.”
Brindley House
Umina NSW, 2003
THe Brindley House is a built prototype for a range of modular project homes that Swell have been developing over the last 20 years. It is 102sqm in area providing 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with a large living/dining area opening out to a timber deck. The house is oriented north and utilises specially designed sun shading louvres to its large areas of glass to modulate solar access. From this early prototype, over 17 dwelling types have been designed in the Swell Houses Portfolio from a 1 bedroom holiday house to a 4 bedroom family home. All houses utilise sustainable products and design to lower energy use and minimise water consumption.
Glenn Hume House
Diamond Beach NSW, 2012
The Glenn Hume House is for a semi retired couple and mother-in-law. As well as providing 3 bedrooms and living/dining/kitchen area, the brief also called for a studio where the clients can paint and play music and a 15m pool. Set on a hectare of semi rural land overlooking a picturesque dam and close to a groveof tall ironbarks, the siting of the house had to take in many considerations: aspect, views to the dam and surrounds, separation from the trees for bushfire protection and neighbour privacy. The final positioning required a split level solution to adjust to the falls of the site. The house is now under construction
