Elysium Rec Club

Noosa Heads, 2012

Split into two pavilions The Rec Club provides a lounge with fully equipped kitchen and bar, a gymnasium with change-rooms opening onto pools and decks along the lake edge. Following the pedestrian path, the experience of the Rec Club begins as an axial procession, the building being incrementally revealed as you descend the stairs. The eye follows the central spine to the day bed which hovers over the water

S House

Sutherland Avenue,Ascot, 2006

The S House project involved the extension of an existing 1980’s ‘modern’ style, rendered masonry residence. The brief called for extra bedroom space to suitably accommodate the increasing independence of the clients’ adult children. Inherent within this brief was the need to balance the separation of these new spaces with a desire to maintain a spatial relationship within the ‘community’ of the larger home. The realisation of this project, as an addition to the front of the house, also offered the opportunity to reinterpret the relationship of the house to the street both in program and aesthetically. The principle design strategy employed in response to this brief, was to develop a generous, light filled, ‘public’ lobby positioned to act as a hinge between the house and the street; the street and the formal ‘public’ areas of the house; and the public and private parts of the house (which include the new areas). Providing a number of vantage points within the lobby reinforces this space as a place of orientation. The bridge over the entry door, the sandstone plinth at the base of the stairs and the staircase landing, all allow other parts of the house to be overlooked. The occupation of this space as a place of transition – somewhere to wait before moving on, or to move through on your way to another area is encouraged by places to greet or wait (the sandstone bench s

Bulimba State School

Bulimba-Brisbane, 2011

Our involvement with Bulimba State School has been long standing and the opportunity to be involved with the BER Hall was welcomed. The school Principal, is committed to Environmentally Sustainable Design and has developed a following amongst the Bulimba community. Biscoe Wilson have collaborated with the school to pursue a building design that is innovative and sustainable. The building includes a multipurpose hall, classrooms, Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Facility, Playgrounds, and outdoor learning areas. The decision to build on a step section of the site created construction challenges, but preserved level land for use by children. Working in close consultation with the school community, the Department of Education and the builder we were able to ensure this project was complete on time and on budget. Documentation was produced to a traditional tender quality that enabled the builder to progress fast and to produce a high quality building. The architect briefed the builder and sub-consultants on the ESD objectives and we believe this early understanding of project objectives by all team members benefitted the whole process. With a construction cost of approximately than $2100/sqm the builder worked hard to maintain the design integrity few compromises were required.
