The brief for this house on a greenfield site was for a warm, contemporary, home. Structural earth walls were constructed from locally sourced earth, adding gravity and warmth to the house. The scheme was developed and then evolved in close consultation with the owners. It was important to the owners that the house responded to the site, taking maximum advantage of views, and was complementary to its landscape. Sustainable design was a priority through passive solar access, thermal mass, water harvesting and re-use, and geothermal heating/cooling.

Introverted and disjointed, the brief was to create a contemporary solution that maximised accommodation on the 360sq.m site, as well as creating a strong connection between rooms, and also to the outdoor areas. The palette reflects the nature of the original house – soft, warm colours and textures, offset by contemporary elements – steel doors, oak floors, burl timber veneer. Accents in blues and greens provide a sophisticated and at times playful thread; picked up in the tessellated tiles on the front verandah
