Bar Barossa

Brisbane CBD, 2010

Bar Barossa is an exclusive wine bar that showcases a variety of premium wines from the Barossa Valley region and Australia. Located on Queen Street, in the Brisbane CBD, a dynamic red facade plays gentle contrast to the purple of their neighbouring sister store, Purple Palate. Internally, a towering wine rack wall displays bottle’s of the bar’s finest wines, some of which date back to 1868. Clever feature lights – colourful large bunches of grapes – take centre stage in this space. Element by day, feature by night, these vibrant shapes provide a wonderful sense of warmth and excitement to the bar. Photography: Scott Burrows

Bremer State High School

Ipswich, 2011

A project in the pipeline at CORE is the new secondary school facility that will accommodate the relocation of Bremer State High School. Completed in 2011, the master planning of this school involves the efficient layout of buildings and pathways based around a series of courtyards, open spaces and covered outdoor learning areas. A carefully considered palette of materials and finishes including face brick, tilt-up concrete, light coloured prefinished metal roofing and durable painted surfaces, means the new Bremer campus will no doubt hold its own next to its university neighbour, the Ipswich campus of UQ.

The Sun Hotel

Townsville, 2011

Refurbishment projects of iconic establishments such as the Sun Hotel in Townsville require careful consideration, and PJ Ryan Hotels have enlisted CORE Architecture to take on the challenge. Our design concept creates a single space, which is inclusive of all functions and is easily legible and practical to serve a variety of clientele. Features of the design include a central bar that is accessed by all patrons, a new restaurant space, children’s play room, intimate lounge, relocated TAB and a glazed cold room. The finishes chosen vary from warm tones to clean and contemporary, with specialist lighting used to create accents and atmosphere of this well-patronised ‘local’ establishment.
