Yencken Residence

Sunshine Beach QLD, 2008

This Sunshine Beach holiday house is designed for family use and for the holiday rental market. The challenging site is located on the beach in a sand dune protection area and required detailed consideration of materials and construction to suit the harsh environment. Designed to incorporate a 6kw grid connected photovoltaic solar power system, a 65,000 litre rainwater tank under the garage, good natural ventilation and the lifecycle lost of building materials, the building addresses the need to reduce energy and water costs, and the impact on the environment.

Hughes House 3

Hughes ACT, 2603

Alterations and additions to 1960’s Canberra house. The house was extended to the rear to take advantage of the northerly aspect and to link the house to the garden. Typical of many early Canberra house the living spaces has a poor connection with the outdoor spaces and the owners, keen gardeners wanted to enjoy the outlook of ‘green’ form every window with seamless connection to the garden and maximise natural light in the living areas. The focus of the extended living area is the large full height windows that overlook the garden and the bold curve of the chimney, an architectural element which anchors the room and houses the gas fireplace. The new living area on a lower level to the main house now opens to the garden at ground level and an outdoor paved area for entertaining. The existing kitchen, which previously looked onto a blank wall through a small window, now overlooks the new living area and also embraces the views of the garden.

Grigg Residence

Sutton NSW, 2003

The clients commissioned Phillips and Associates Architects to design a house with a country feel externally and contemporary internal spaces with good functionality. The roof is a traditional Dutch gable roof with a wide eave that reflects a more traditional style farmhouse, but with clean lines and the detail of a more contemporary building. Working with the clients finishes and fittings were selected to enable the clients to put their stamp on the project. The clients said they were very happy with the design and especially enjoyed the interior spaces, the relationship to the outdoors and relaxing in the north facing courtyard in cooler months and on the east facing deck in warm weather overlooking the garden and rural landscape.
