Projects:
Permit Zone
Carlton North, 2009
City of Yarra inaugral Sustainability Awards 2010, Highly Commended, Innovation in Sustainable Building Design. Inner city terrace makeovers are a dime a dozen. Infinitely more challenging is a conversion that adds a significant amount of space in an upward direction, within heritage guidelines. Into the mix goes present sustainability and future accessibility requirements. The ingenious solution of creating a ‘mezzanine’ type extension that extends only about a metre above the existing roofline, provides a complete suite of modern guest accommodation that barely disturbs the essence of the location. Luxurious and light, full-sized living that has to be seen to be believed. Downstairs, the gracious features of the old have been retained and augmented with the delight of progressing from the stately front area to the uplifting, new, living area at the rear. Old bricks recycled; water tank; natural airflow and light – old meets new in an exciting and complementary fusion.
Two Townhouses
Northcote, 2010
BPN Sustainability awards 2010. Finalist. Multi-density. At first glance, the visage of these two modern townhouses is at one with the eclectic avenue of homes on which they reside. Then a playfully curved roofline emerges, the form of a stairwell, skylights….. Future-proofed by incorporating accessibility features and flexible room layout, the main attractions of these townhouses lie out of sight of the casual observer. The rear of each residence – light, spacious and airy at all times – converts, with a few simple features, to an indoor/outdoor entertainment paradise. Rotate the kitchen bench to one side, fold back the rear wide-opening doors to the deck, roll away the cleverly placed barbeque area doors and enjoy flexible living at its best.
