Central Shule Chabad

Caulfield, 2012

The Central Shule Chabad is a purpose built synagogue for the greater South Caulfield Jewish Community. It is a place to bring members of the local congregation together, acting as a hub for religious and social interaction. By utilizing a central foyer space, the building is separated into daily and weekly services and general congregation activities thus enabling the design to function as a versatile community building. Stone has been sourced from Israel to clad the curved cantilevered wall on the Maple St façade, while the precast base is detailed with an abstracted Star of David pattern.

Xero Headquarters, Melbourne

Hawthorn, 2012

Xero is a young, global, online accountancy software company; it is a modern workplace. Upon entering the building the visitor is made to feel welcome. The mood is industrial, with natural light flooding in from the north and south. Glimpses of the ‘spill-out area’, informal meeting room, kitchen area and staircase are afforded from the foyer of this open-plan office. The beautifully crafted, blackbutt reception desk sets the standard of detailing and materiality upheld throughout. The rich timber is complimented by the warmth of the bronzed mirror behind, which adds ambiguity to the space. Branding is subtley incorporated by applying translucent logos to internal glazing and utilising ‘Xero-blue’ to key elements such as kitchen hardware. The caf’-style kitchen area is gutsy and colourful; the red flock wallpaper, recycled brickwork, concrete benchtop, leather seating, checkerplate wall panels, and LED cluster lighting combine to create a moody space, facilitating informal interactions.
