The architecture and design of Tallis Architecture aims to provide a unique service with unique outcomes. As sole principal and architect, John Tallis is the driving force behind each and every project. Operating in private practice since 2006, John has developed a range of projects that demonstrate his ability to create great architecture. With almost 20 years experience, John is able to draw from broad range of disciplines and projects. John’s passion for the environment is a major driver in much of his work. His technical understanding of Environmental Sustainable Design equip him to be a leader in a sustainable future.

Apollo Bay, 2011
An elevated sloping site in a relatively urban environment, providing sweeping views along the coast from Cape Paton through to Marengo. The site provides plenty of access to views of rolling hills and bushland classically tailing off into the ocean that is Cape Otway. Although the house is primarily a coastal beach house, it has been designed to adapt to the demanding complexity of full time living and logistics of a young family. The plan is developed around two distinct pods, creating a void from which to enter. The entry is via a meandering ramp that passes over a dry creek bed providing the visitor a controlled aspect from which to view the building on arrival. At the elevated entry there is a choice of upstair or down, whilst the view beyond beckons the visitor upstairs to the more public spaces of living and dining. Within the pods spaces are prioritized and balanced for the need of solar gain and the individual function and amenity that the room demands. The forms are read from inside to outside, as the external aesthetic extends through the entry-breezeway creating a strong delineation of the spaces from within. This provides thermal flexibility and critical control of thermal comfort for each of the four primary spaces. The building presents itself canter levering off a ridge line as one approaches from the distance. As a cellar door the building embodies the ideals of Tallis Wines, a clean honest approach, of excellent family values with good environmental credentials. Simple materials palette develops a practical, clean solution. As a destination the building caters to a wide ranging customer base, a great day out in the country to a simple opportunity to taste the local produce that they as so passionate about; wine.

Richmond, 2002
Simple extension to a Victorian double block fronted cottage in Richmond overlooking the Barkly gardens. The planning maximises the northern aspect creating a spectacular outlook on such a small block. Open plan living and Kitchen with 3 Bedrooms gives the house plenty of amenity.
