Wise House

Dunsborough, 2010

This was a design for a new house at the Wise Winery in Western Australia. The client wanted an elegant house that used simple materials and connected with the landscape. The house was designed using a limited palette of concrete, glass, timber and pre-rusted steel.

Webb House

St Kilda, 2010

We designed this extension and it was finished at the end of 2010. It is very sustainable. It includes: – Making good the front of the house. – Maximising solar orientation and using passive solar gain in winter – shaded in summer. … – Solar hot water via evacuated tubes with instantaneous gas boosting. (for hot water and hydronic heating) – Hydronic in-slab heating and hydronic radiators elsewhere. – Insulation over BCA standard that extends under the slab and floorboards. – Extensive reuse of brickwork from partial demolision of back. – Plantation timber cladding at upper storey. (Thick pailing fence). – Recycled timber floorboards for some wall finishes and cabinetry. – 10 Photo-voltaic roof panels (typically selling back to the grid). – oversize ‘Whirlybird’ vents good natural airflow cooling in summer. – 5000L underground rainwater tank that provides for laundry, irrigation and WC flush. – Low energy lights that are all on dimmers. – Low energy appliances including a ‘found’ gas oven. – Low water use taps and showerheads. – Double glazing throughout. – Planting to provide summer shade. – Food bearing, water wise planting. – Skylights to provide ample natural light. All this on a site that is approx 6m x 25m. (We looked at grey and blackwater recovery but the rainwater system in this house is fine for this scale of project). Built by Tony Palmer Builders.
