Goolwa Residence
Goolwa, 2009
Set on the banks of the Murray River, this strawbale home was designed with the intent to provide a self-sufficient home. The high-insulative strawbale walls are used throughout, with internal framed walls fitted with high density R2.5 insulation batts. In-slab heating and the hot water is supplied by a heat pump system. Windows are coated with e-Glass to increase thermal performance. Verandah and eaves overhangs are designed to shade the walls in summer and allow sunlight to enter the high level windows in winter. A central courtyard provides a sheltered outdoor area when winds on the exterior are strong. Large rainwater tanks store all the water used in the residence, captured from the expansive roof area. Low VOC paints and finished are used throughout, with milk based paints on rendered surfaces. Zones are incorporated to reduce the heating and cooling loads, reduce the size of mechanical services used and isolate different areas for different uses.
