William McCormack Place 2

Cairns, 2010

Stage Two of the Queensland Government’s award winning office facility in Cairns has been designed in collaboration with Cox Rayner Architects. It has been awarded a 6 star Greenstar rating, and will therefore be the most environmentally sustainable office building in the Australian tropics. Providing nearly 10,000sqm of office space for various government departments, the $50m building has been designed to meet stringent Government office quality standards, but also achieves maximum sun-shading, thermal efficiency and indoor environment quality.

Tinaroo Studio

Yungaburra, 2007

The Tinaroo Studio is a carefully considered house in which to experience quiet and seclusion. It is located in a rural setting with direct access to Lake Tinaroo and set within a stand of trees. The design of the studio seeks to address the water and surrounding vegetation through a combination of framed views and transparency between internal and external living spaces. The external fire place provides a physical and congregational focal point, extending the living space beyond the studio. The large roofs float over the masonry blade walls, lightening the perception of the building while allowing light and air to penetrate at high level. Sunshades protect the studio from the heat of the day, sheltering openings which provide the internal spaces access to breezes. The selection of materials and finishes such as sandstone and blackbean timber was chosen to reflect the surrounding landscape and for ease of maintenance.

Marina Point

Cairns, 2008

The Marina Point development is centred around a significant green courtyard that provides an identity for the surrounding waterfront precinct. Fronting the courtyard are the Cairns Yacht Club, Boat Shed, Restaurant, bar and retail areas which activate the development, creating a unique tropical waterfront environment. Plant and marina amenity facilities are located on the periphery of the development to provide easy service access. The Cairns Yacht Club facilities are located adjacent to a central courtyard for the easy access to the water. The architectural response to the site and its environment is a contemporary tropical building set within a landscaped waterfront precinct. CA Architects and Cox Rayner Architects developed an architecture that responds to the tradition of Far North Queensland architecture, by providing external covered verandah areas, with large area over hangs and high space. The significant use of timber reinforces its location, as well as its maritime theme.
