Cairns North Substation
The design of the Cairns North Substation was commissioned by Ergon Energy as part of a greater infrastructure upgrade to address emerging limitations in the electricity distribution network supplying Cairns. The Cairns City Substation in Sheridan Street, also designed by Clarke and Prince Architects in 1989 was fast approaching its load capacity as a result of rapid growth in the city area, and a new substation with supply lines was needed to ensure security of supply to customers. The site for the substation has a prominent corner location on a busy inner city road amidst a mixture of largely commercial developments. Residential properties are also located off the side street. One of the key design challenges for this project was to create a building which not only provided for the very specific functional and equipment requirements of a substation, but addressed the commercial/residential context of the area. The objective here was to provide an interesting, suitably scaled and articulated commercial looking building which would enhance the immediate context, without completely concealing the machine like properties of the building.
