Tucker Residence

Birchgrove, 2008

This alteration and addition to a Birchgrove house originating from 1985 involved the construction on a second storey and the remodeling and refurbishment of existing interior spaces. The design is sympathetic to the original home but upgrades it to current living standards. The centrally located and north facing courtyard provides excellent sunlight into the home and the new top floor containing two new bedrooms and a bathroom offers views towards the Harbour Bridge. The approval of the top floor involved negotiation with Council and Neighbours.

Branga Avenue

Copacabana, 2009

This unusual project called for a ‘facelift’ to a comfortable but otherwise unattractive holiday house. While the rear of the building offered the desirable lifestyle of relaxing on a large deck overlooking the bush the front of the house looked like a caravan. The only on site parking involved negotiating a steep ramp from the elevated street. The brief called for a new car port located at street level and a ‘prettying’ up of the front facade. The design approach adapted was to essentially cover the existing home with the carport and a large veranda opening onto a front court. It is the materials chosen that ensure the success of the project including a sandstone base, hardwood timber posts, aluminum shutters and frameless glass.

CHAPEL/COMMUNITY ROOM, Allambie Lutheran Homes

Allambie Heights , 2008

This project was the final stage of a major upgrade completed by Straesser Architects to the Retirement Village. The Chapel serves as a meeting place and community room for the residents of the village. The building was designed as a wall to visually exclude the north facing car park but enclose a south facing courtyard. As a Community Room it aims to be iconic. A place of difference to the home.
