Ugly house

Eltham, 2013

The ugly house is an alteration and addition to an existing 1960’s dwelling in the eucalypt lined streets of Eltham. The clients, newly arrived expats wanted to create a house to be proud of, something that is local and in no way nostalgic of their scottish and welsh origins. The response is a composition of gable-ended forms clad in white weatherboards that forms a backdrop to the distinctly Australian landscape that surrounds the site rather than being subsumed by it. The interior layout has been rearranged to respond to passive solar principles and create a series of spatially diverse interlocking volumes each with its own unique character. Distant views of the hills are framed and natural light is manipulated to illustrate the passing of the day.

House Clovelly

Sydney, 2013

House Clovelly sits on top of the cliffs at Clovelly overlooking the Tasman Sea. This large house was designed to accomodate a young family of seven. The House was designed to facilitate the use of Prefabricated building technology. The ground floor was built in situ whilst the upper two floors were built in a factory in Melbourne and shipped to Sydney. This innovative approach resulted in an economical and timely build.
