The Terrace
Melbourne, 2014
The renovation of an existing two storey house in Prahran takes its starting point from the modernist character of the existing building. Developing and updating the existing house using contemporary materials, fixtures and fittings and installing double glazing and new insulation improves the aesthetic and environmental performance of the building. A new roof deck over the garage provides unexpected external space and city views from the compact site. The project evokes the Australian modernist architecture of the 60’s and 70’s and architects such as Robin Boyd, Roy Grounds and McGlashan and Everist. Specific details have been developed to express the natural character of, and an honest approach to, the materials whilst reinterpreting details and materials found in modernist homes in a contemporary way.
Merton
Melbourne, 2012
Inspired by the existing Victorian house on a corner site the project reinterprets the bay windows and scale and arrangement of internal spaces to create new contemporary kitchen and living spaces at the rear of the existing house. The dark stained curvilinear timber wall continues the line of the facade and creates a shadow of the original house and discreetly sits in the garden. A large curved glass window and bench seat in the kitchen and two large sliding windows create contemporary bay window arrangements where the residents can sit in the sun and view the garden. Ginger Jones
Dandenong, 2013
Ginger Jones is a new cafe in the heart of Dandenong. The cafe brings a building that has been derelict for over 10 years back to life and makes a valuable contribution to Lonsdale Street. Preserving and restoring the existing masonry walls, existing concrete floors and exposing the timber ceiling structure, the shell of the building retains the character of the original. Establishing a sustainable approach to re-development by retaining much of the existing building fabric and exploiting the latent qualities of the materials and spaces.
