Black Box
Byron Place, Adelaide, 2008
Shared by Ashley Halliday Architects (Upstairs) and Anouk Style Directive (Downstairs), Black Box is a compact contemporary shop-house carefully composed to develop a unique local identity and quality life experiences within the Adelaide CBD’s eclectic West End. A magnet for creatives, Black Box is defined by abundant natural light, ventilation, ideas and gorgeous, finely crafted things. Carefully crafted western-red cedar boxes (stained black) perch over a china-white podium. The building values elegant scale, geometry and balanced proportion, the composition creating a strong sense of local identity and place at Byron Place. A strong focus on sustainable living including rainwater storage and reuse, active shading systems, and plumbing to suit grey and black water treatment systems. Wattle Street House
Malvern, –
Currently under construction, this unique extension to a traditional stone and brick villa in Malvern features a glazed bridge spanning over a new swimming pool, providing a defined threshold and an impressive transition from the older home to a new contemporary pavilion. The split-level, open plan arrangement of spaces and direct setting within the garden, will create and attractive and engaging variety of spaces for family and friends to enjoy, complimenting the more restive and private spaces within the original villa. The extension away is distinguishable from the the heritage structure using a new architectural language of clean lines and detailing, with a minimal palette of polished concrete, glass, timber and stone.
Equine Health & Performance Centre
Roseworthy Campus, SA, –
The University of Adelaide’s Equine Health & Performance Centre (EHPC), currently under construction, is a new $10m centre of excellence in equine health, teaching and research. With Brief Development and Design led by AHA with documentation and project delivery by Hassell, the EHPC complements the recently opened $37m Companion Animal Health Centre providing, air-conditioned intensive care stalls for horses, with dedicated stalls for mares and foals; triage, diagnostic and outpatient areas; a high power imaging suite for X-rays and ultrasound examinations; state of the art surgical theatres and anaesthesia rooms; teaching rooms with direct visual access to the surgeries; intensive care facilities; an isolation area for horses with infectious diseases; a reproduction facility.
