Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership

North Melbourne, 2012

The Bastow Institute is a place of professional development for Victorian teachers, and will facilitate interaction on local, state, national and international levels. The project involves the restoration of a derelict heritage-listed state school and a contemporary extension which includes an underground lecture theatre, additional learning spaces and leading audio visual and IT systems. The architectural design centres upon the spatial interpretation of pedagogical principles in the context of “old” and “new” buildings.

Its sinuous elements capture the restaurant’s dynamic location and activity like the “motion blur” of a photographer’s snapshot
